Advancing the research and treatment of Alzheimer’s, dementia and diseases of aging

The Johnny and Romie Orr Center for Healthy Aging and Memory Loss is a world class center for the study of memory loss, Alzheimer's, dementia and other diseases of aging.

The medical and scientific experts at The Orr Center pursue academic, clinical and theoretical research in an effort to identify innovative treatment protocols that can help delay the onset of debilitating diseases and their progression.

Our goal is to develop clinical approaches that enable patients with these diseases, and their families, to cope more effectively with their illnesses and achieve a better quality of life for as long as possible.

The ORR CENTER...bringing science to the bedside,

A Message from Coach Johnny Orr Minimize

During my many years as a college basketball coach, I learned that the secret to winning is to put the right people in place, have a sound game plan based on careful research, and then give them the resources—training, practice and other supports—they need to succeed.

The same is true when it comes to the fight against Alzheimer’s and other diseases of aging. To beat these terrible illnesses, we need medical experts who are dedicated to finding better treatments and cures. We need to support ongoing research that can lead to effective treatments. And, we need to provide the resources that will let them succeed in this important work.

That’s why we have created the Johnny and Romie Orr Center for Healthy Aging and Memory Loss. The Healthy Aging and Memory Loss Center is a not-for-profit organization that combines ongoing research in diseases of aging with a clinical practice where new treatments can be immediately put to work.

Alzheimer’s is a tough opponent, but we can beat it. Please join us by supporting The Orr Center in any way you can.

"We Got Our Dad Back!" Minimize

The following case study gives an example of why we are so excited about our work at the Orr Center. Mr. Paul “Boyd” Mather has given us his permission to share his story.

Boyd took part in our “Brain Wellness” study in 2006. At the beginning of the study we made a firm diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He underwent comprehensive baseline neuropsychological testing and a PET scan of the brain. We also obtained anecdotal information on his overall ability to function from his wife and children. Then, for six months, he participated in the brain wellness program.

At the end of the program we repeated his testing and re-interviewed his family. His improvement was dramatic. His brain scan demonstrated marked improvement. His ability to remember, converse, and function stabilized. Perhaps the most important report however came from his wife.

At the last visit of the study, she said through tears, “I thought this regimen would slow the progress of his disease. I’m crying today because we have seen much more than that. We got our Dad back.”
